Three Wines to Serve on Boxing Day

Diana Groom, Tour Host

In the mad dash into Christmas, all we see around the stores are adverts telling us to ‘Back British Farming.’ So, why not ‘Back English Wine?’ This Christmas, shop local, and try our award-winning Cotswold wines to elevate any holiday gathering.

You’ve got mounds of leftovers, not a lot of energy and yet you’re still having more guests over this afternoon. What to do? Start with our Boxing Day guide to figure out what wines pair with what delicious leftovers.

Culver Hill 2023

The Culver Hill is our signature white blend that offers us a crisp, dry expression of the best of our vineyard. On the palate, you find notes of citrus fruits and ripe cantaloupe melon, in addition to a vibrant minerality. The finish is refreshing with an underlying salinity that will leave you wanting more.

The Culver Hill is the perfect welcome drink for your Boxing Day guests, as it can accompany a variety of light canapés or stand alone as the toast to your festivities. It pairs well with a charcuterie board and lemon garlic olives, a luxe fish pie, lobster mac n cheese or a leftover creamy turkey or chicken supreme.

Orpheus Bacchus 2023

If you read our Christmas Dinner Guide, you will know I also recommended the Orpheus Bacchus, but it really is the unsung hero of the vineyard. It is my go-to white wine for my red-wine drinking friends as it surprises everyone with its complex structure and heavier mouth-feel, making it my perfect food-pairing white wine.

The Orpheus Bacchus is an expression of some of the oldest vines at the vineyard, and offers rich mineral notes, in addition to gooseberry, elderflower and fresh pink grapefruit. It has a long and complex finish that allows it to pair versatilely with complex and spicy dishes.

Orpheus Bacchus pairs extremely well with a cheese board, or more specifically a single Gloucester cheese atop a cream cracker, drizzled with copious amounts of hot honey. It also pairs very well with a leftover turkey curry or a classic Boxing Day bubble and squeak.

Rosé 2023

When you’ve had a heavy eating day on Christmas and instead want a lighter Boxing Day, look no further than our Rosé. Rosé is sourced from the Regent grape and offers a weightier expression of a rosé with a complex structure and rich finish. There are fresh notes of cranberry and raspberry, along with a hint of rhubarb. This is the vineyard’s proclaimed ‘Winter Rosé’ that will impress your guests, without overfilling them.

Rosé pairs well with your leftover turkey pie and rich gravy sauce, a turkey veggie stir fry or a leftover turkey risotto. If you aren’t up for much cooking, the Rosé will pair well with heavier canapés such as pork pies or sausage rolls.
